Bear Blog Engine is a modern blogging platform created as a “build your own X” project, both backend and frontend!

Yes, it has a backend, which means it is *not* JAMStack (contrary to popular trends) and thus requires a server to host the API. This is primarily so I could learn Go and  databases in a large project. But the good news is that you can use Vercel to deploy the frontend with a CDN with a Cloudflare proxy to cache static assets for fast load times across the world - all for free!

Major technologies/frameworks used are Next.js (React), Redux, Go (gorilla/mux router), Redis, and PostgreSQL.

# Features

The initial production-ready version of the blog engine was released after 8 months of development and currently includes:

* Search Engine Optimized (SEO)
  * Pages are server-side rendered
  * A .webp copy of uploaded feature-images are created automatically
  * Very fast page loading times (pre-rendered using [incremental static generation](https://arunoda.me/blog/what-is-nextjs-issg))
* Progressive Web App (PWA)
  * Service-worker provides offline support and cache (Try going offline in the developer tools!)
* Support for multiple editors and admins
* Ability to edit and create users or posts from a dashboard
* Secure authentication with reCaptcha and JWTs
* Easy startup and development with docker-compose
* WYSIWYG editor with support for embeds
* Support for categories using tags
* Responsive Layout
* Redux to save fetched posts during navigation and thus reduce API requests
* Uses keyset pagination for getting “pages” of posts (like Twitter)
